Fly Fishing

In Fly fishing ... catching “the big one” isn’t guaranteed, and sometimes the unlikeliest angler gets the best catch. As in so many other things, the payoff lies in enjoying oneself, refining skills, learning from the experience, and sharing it with othUers. When everything works together, catching is an absolute thrill. Carefully releasing the catch maximizes the benefits of this magnificent sport.

For the serious fly fisher, Misty Valley Lodge offers a range of dams, well stocked with trophy trout. We even cater for the eager young fly fisher with smaller stocked dams - perfect bonding time for dad and his young trainee.

Should you bring your own fly fishing equipment and are keen to catch some fish, we charge a rod and bag fee per angler per weekend (Friday to Sunday). Mid-week visitors (Mondays to Thursdays), pay a reduced rod fee. Should you need to hire some equipment, we have rod, reels and nets available for hire, alternatively you can purchase equipment from our trading store.

STILLWATER TROPHY TROUT @ MISTY VALLEY

• Two stillwaters, approximately 3 ha, stocked bi-annually with rainbow and golden trout (500g - 4.5kg).

Misty Valley Lodge hosts a number of fly fishing clinics throughout the year. We often have well known fly fishermen sharing there experiences and giving out some of their useful hints and tips. These weekends are not to be missed!

SPECIES TO CATCH @ MISTY VALLEY

GOLDEN TROUT
The golden trout has golden flanks with a red, horizontal band along the lateral line and 10 dark oval marks called “parr marks”, five per side. Dorsal, lateral and anal fins have white leading edges. In their native habitat, adults range from 15–30 cm long. Fish over 25 cm are considered large.

RAINBOW TROUT
Streamlined body silvery or light golden in colour with small black spots. Dorsal, caudal fins are black spotted and adipose fin with black edge and spots a broad lilac-mauve band from head to caudal fin. Head rounded with the lower jaws of mature males slightly enlarged and hooked.

BROWN TROUT
Streamlined body, colouring varies with age and water conditions, but all have large brown and red spots on the sides and upper surfaces of the head and body. Lower body colour varies from silver brown to yellowish. Lower jaws in mature males tend to become large and hooked.
